People who had suffered through WW2 wanted to feel that there would be some benefit to the common people - 70 years later and the NHS is still one of the most loved institutions in the UK despite being avowedly a socialist endeavour. NB I am not a supporter of the current Labour Party (AKA "New Labour") but they do deserve a lot of credit for what they did back then.

Many political parties can be credited with positive actions, but were those actions the "great message" that formed the basis they were elected on?

The nearest example I can see in recent history was the ANC in South Africa since 1994.
