You can work around this (a) vacuuming it by hand or (b) just deleting it (losing all your visited links). I did this and Firefox is suddenly as fast as Chromium. (Xubuntu 14.04, 4GB RAM.)

FF 28.0 in the Ubuntu 14.04 repo, now on FF 29.0. So, no, this is a current problem.
