They did not seem to succeed very well. On my M1 iPad Air and iPhone 12 mini background YT playback works mostly fine via Brave, although you might have to go to full screen first before you enter background mode.
This might be an open door, but I use the amazing HN-reader app called Hack which offers a filter that hides posts via a list of keywords you can manage. Of course some false negatives happen this way, but I don't mind about that.
Pretty severe -- ADP allows users to store data with e2e encryption.
Disabling ADP is a pretty serious* thing to do -- and pretty disappointing since I was interested in the product. Since it's OSS though this might be something that can be worked around in the future.
That’s a good question. To be completely honest, I don’t know much about Advanced Data Protection myself, and I didn’t do anything specific in the app to detect or interact with it.
I’m actually curious: how did you discover that it doesn’t work when Advanced Data Protection is enabled? Was it through an error message, incomplete backups, or something else you noticed?
The app that the person you're replying to ('gerdemb) created (Photos Backup Anywhere) is different than the open-source CLI tool that is the HN submission (icloud_photos_downloader).
I just ignore all the smart features and never connect my smart TV to the internet, and I disconnected the WiFi antennas from the main board. I use an Apple TV to feed it live TV, series and movies via apps.
Wait... aren't AC's one of the prevalent causes of global warming, so in effect partly causing more heat related deaths?
And what about stress caused by noise pollution from AC's?
I think we need less units - not more.
Technically, but in practice....
On top of that the production of AC's is also a factor, and there is the spilling of the refrigerant liquids that only recently became much less damaging.
I’ve wondered about this many times. How much would the world cool if we turned the HVAC off for a week, a month, permanently? I mean, we watched as the natural world breathed a sigh of relief on 9/11 as all planes were grounded. We watched nature reassert itself in places humans vacated during COVID. So why not HVAC?
Exactly, Windows 2000 was such a comfortable workhorse. And lightning fast, it made me doubt why I was a Mac head. I switched briefly until OS X grew up and surpassed any version of Windows in reliability and versatility (for me).
